Honeybourne Wednesday Club met on March 3 when we went to Norton Grange to celebrate our annual dinner. Due to the very bad weather we had it was better to see the snow gone before we ‘oldies’ ventured out. It was a very appetising meal which everyone enjoyed. Mr Fletcher the solicitor for the Walker Memorial Fund, thanked us for inviting him along with Mr Jacques who is to take over as Mr Fletcher retires at the end of the month. We wished him a happy retirement. Mr Oliver Humphreys, treasurer, handed out the balance sheet for the year ending December 2009 which again showed our funds in a very healthy state. Mrs Boath read the minutes of our last AGM, they were adopted by Mrs Dyde, seconded by Mrs Russell. We have a full programme for both monthly meetings and trips during the summer. Mr and Mrs Batchelor brought along a beautiful cake to celebrate their forthcoming golden wedding. Mrs Boath thanked Oliver and Anne for arranging the ‘special raffle’ which we always enjoy. It was a lovely afternoon and we all went home feeling very happy.

At their February meeting, chaired by Cllr Tony Wilkins, the PC heard an account of the threat to the green lanes on the Compton Scorpion Estate. Mr Andrew Knight and Ms Caroline Warren explained that the CC were being pressured to open a route through Compton Scorpion to motorised traffic. This would adversely affect this lovely piece of countryside and all those who used it for walking, riding and cycling through. At present it was not being used by vehicles at all, only by farmers. It was a big circuit for horse riders and was used frequently by walkers. If it were opened to 4WD vehicles and off-road motorbikes, the peace of this quiet route would be ruined for both horse riders and walkers and for the residents in the cottages on the route. The CC had agreed to apply to try either to ‘Stop-up’ the route to motorised vehicles, retaining it as a bridleway, or to apply a ‘Traffic Restriction Order’ that would ban motorised traffic. In order to open the route to vehicles, the Council would need to erect a bridge over a stream, at an estimated cost of £40,000. County Cllr. Seccombe reported that no work would be going ahead until the investigation into the Stopping-up order or Traffic Restriction Order had been completed. Mr Knight and Ms Warren urged the PC and any interested individuals to write to the CC with their objections. The PC agreed unanimously to oppose the plan to open the route up to motorised traffic.

On Friday evening this week, you (and this word particularly applies if you are a woman) are most warmly invited to join with other women, not only in Harvington but all over the world, in what is known as the Women's World Day of Prayer. This has become a well-established tradition which, here in our village, is celebrated alternately at one or other of our two churches, this year at the Baptist church. All are welcome, there is no suggestion that you need to be a regular churchgoer so, if you would like to feel that you are part of this wave of worship and prayer which encircles the world, please come along to the Baptist chapel on Friday of this week in time for the service at 6 o'clock. Each year, a service is drawn up by women of a different country, this year it is Cameroon but the service will be about women (and of course, their families and circumstances) everywhere. Do come if you possibly can and add your voice and your prayers. Come early and have a cup of tea first!
