AFTER a glorious few days the first of June was wet and cold. However, this didn’t dampen our spirits and with Pimm’s in hand we listened, enthralled, to Eugene Schellenberg tell us about the Ifakara Bakery Project in Tanzania. He and his wife Margaret had gone to visit their son working in this small town in 1998. While there they were asked if they could help, using their background knowledge, to help set up a bakery in part of the convent. This would ensure that even in times of drought no one would ever starve. After fundraising back in the UK they shipped over the equipment in 2001and started baking. They now produce over 900 loaves per day. Some is sold while the rest is produced for the hospital to ensure the patients get fed and the local kindergarten children get one meal a day. Infant fatality has now reduced dramatically – a daily chunk of nutritious bread really helps. Every penny raised buys loaves of bread and we were happy to donate the funds from our raffle along with other contributions to this worthwhile cause.
