10:48am Tuesday 23rd February 2010

Our January meeting had been cancelled due to appalling weather at the time so it was good to get together again in February, especially in the now ‘super warm’ village hall, thanks to its re-roofing. We are all grateful to those who raised funds for and organised this improvement.

Our November meeting, the AGM, opened with president June Lloyd welcoming WI adviser Ann Meredith who had travelled from Malvern to oversee the conduct of the meeting. June then announced that the collection in memory of Margaret Woodford had raised £30 which would be divided between the County Air Ambulance and St Richards Hospice. The AGM began with reports by treasurer Val Witts and secretary Mo Simmons both of which were adopted. The president then thanked all those who had contributed to the running of another happy and enjoyable year for Littletons WI.

For the second month in succession our meeting opened on a sad note with the president June Lloyd announcing the sudden death of longstanding member Margaret Woodford. Margaret was a popular member who always seemed to wear a smile. At the conclusion of the meeting Jean Bayliss told of happy times in their youth and showed us some wonderful photographs of Littletons WI events such as cricket matches, carnival floats and Japanese tea parties. It should all prove an inspiration to younger members to see how much effort has been put into our WI in the past and hopefully encourage them to continue the village tradition.

The President Pauline Bamber welcomed everyone to the meeting the theme of which was a “Ghost Evening” to celebrate Halloween. Apologies - Pat Chitty, Phyll Campbell, Gillian Jeynes, Barbara Forrester and Carol Jones. Record of the previous meeting was put on the table for members to read and was signed at the end of the meeting. There were no matters arising. The President thanked Jane Foreman for the flowers on the table and birthday wishes were given to 3 members, Margaret Hyder, Maggie Stroud and Mrs Mackerdine Smith. A card had been received from Suzanne Owen to thank those who helped at the Fishing Weekend. A good profit was made. Members were reminded about the Book Club and that there is no restriction on how long a book can be kept on loan. Anyone donating a book to the club was asked to put their name in the front, or to write, “Do not return” if they did not want it back. Pauline had received a leaflet about Spanx Underwear, which had been recommended by last month’s speaker. New members were advised that if they pay their subs now, they could save 50p on next years membership fee.

The September meeting was lead by vice president Jean Bayliss who had to open on a sad note by announcing the death of Joan Langston. Joan came to the Littletons as a member of the land army during the second world war and helped found Littletons WI. Her loss is particularly sad as we prepare to celebrate our 60th birthday the coming WI year.

For our July meeting we decided to try something a little different, so following our traditional opening with the singing of Jerusalem and the conclusion of WI business, our evening was devoted to the words of wisdom offered by our speaker for the evening, Caroline Walton ‘Image Consultant’. Caroline began by telling us the importance of ‘first impressions’. That people form an impression of us from our appearance in just two or three seconds and if the impression is unfavourable it may take as many as twenty future meetings for that opinion of us to change. She told us that ‘looking good’ is more about style than fashion and that style should relate to personality. She described basic different body shapes and the best shape of clothing for each, then went on to demonstrate the importance of accessories and how they can enhance a basic capsular wardrobe. She showed us different ways of wearing the many scarves that most of us have tucked away in drawers and how to use what may have become a dated piece of jewellery in a new and fashionable way.

‘Jerusalem’ rang out particularly loudly at our June meeting. It was our Open Evening and WI members had gathered from the Littletons to welcome around 50 guests from surrounding villages.

Following the singing of Jerusalem, the May meeting opened with the quiz team being congratulated on their second place in the group quiz and Jean Bayliss reported on the WFWI Annual council meeting at Malvern, where antiques expert David Barbie had proved to be a very amusing speaker.

President Pauline Bamber welcomed 29 members to the meeting on April 20. Pauline has seen an archived article in the local paper about WI in the area 75 years ago and one of the members mentioned was from Church Lench. This was just 15 years after the WI was founded. Maggie, Jennie and Pauline went together for a course on tracing ancestors at Denham College, Maggie managed to trace her ancestors back as far as 1720. Carol Yates also went to Denham where she learnt how to make stained glass and she explained how hard it was to make, cutting the glass into the different shapes, shaping the lead and then waterproofing it all with a grey sludge. She bought along the piece that she had made which was stunning, everyone admired it.
