At our March meeting, we were treated to a fantastic evening by Sue Darley with her 'Film and Television Dogs'. The four dogs, Fidget, Tori, Cracker and Dodger, gave a brilliant display of obedience and were trained to respond to anyone using the same commands. Most of them originated in a Dogs Rescue Home or Trust. They had appeared in various films, such as Cranford, Young Victoria and Doc Martin, to name but a few. You wanted to take them home as they were so delightful! Sue was thanked by Lesley Janowski. Jenny McLeish, our president, welcomed guests, Sue Hampson and Ruth Guthrie and she also wished the WI a Happy 59th birthday.

Our Meeting on March 2 had a very satisfactory start, when the Chairman, Mrs Cynthia Johnson, presented a cheque for £1960 to Major Ian Baldry for our 2009 Charity 'Help for Heroes'. This fantastic amount had been raised by the very generous efforts of Guild Members holding a Charity Lunch, Coffee Morning, Tea Afternoon, Open House, Raffles, donations from our Literary Group and several performances by The Guilded Lilies our Entertainment Group.

Pershore and District Gardening club held its monthly meeting in Wulstan Hall on Thursday February 25. There was a very good attendance which included six new or returning members and four visitors. Our speaker for the evening was Marie Paginton and her talk was entitled 'Snowdrops'. We enjoyed a lively mix of chat and slides. We were given a detailed talk on the botany of the snowdrop with slides to explain the different species and varieties within each one. Marie also explained about the growing and propogation methods used. Then we were treated to some inside stories and gossip about 'Galanthophiles' and their quest for new varieties. It was reminiscent of a soap opera, and we were astounded at the prices some will pay for just one bulb, some changing hands for several hundred pounds! She told of her experiences helping a snowdrop grower to harvest and pack bulbs 'in the green', for despatch around the world. There followed a lively question and answer section and everyone felt they had had an enjoyable introduction to the world of snowdrops.

The members of Pershore WI were taken on an Okavango Odyssey by speaker Phred Newbury at the start of their February meeting. The illustrated talk was in two parts: first a safari through the Maremi Wildlife Reserve where we saw beautiful photographs of Phred’s close encounters with various wild animals and then we learnt about the pre-school at Samochima, a remote village in North-West Botswana, which she visits to help teach the children and arrange improvements to the building. It was all most interesting and Helen Roe gave the vote of thanks.

On February 2 we held our Annual General Meeting and our 6th Birthday Party at the Football Cluib in Pershore. Before our meeting started Mrs Sarah Hudson came to talk to us about the Evesham Stroke Unit, giving us an insight on the workings and aims of the Unit, as it is our Charity for the current year. After the usual reports on our last year's activiites, we had tea and a slice of Birthday cake. We were then entertained by our own Guilded Lilies and finished up with a general sing a long. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday March 2 at 2 o'clock at the Football Club, Pershore. Visitors will be very welcome.

Rob Flemming entertained us at the February meeting, talking about 'Shazam-History of the Regal Cinema in Evesham'. His very interesting presentation took us through the various changes of ownership and names of the cinema throughout its history, arriving at the Regal today. Many great occasions have been celebrated there and it certainly brought back very special memories to a few of our members! Rob was thanked by Fran Geering.

The first meeting of the New Year was held at Wulstan Hall on Thursday January 28 and was well attended despite the weather. We were treated to an audio visual slide prestenation by Anita and John Ruffell. The subject was Focus on Scottish Gardens. On a cold winter evening it was a treat to be transported to a host of the best gardens in Scotland, including Dawyck Botanical, Castle Kennedy, Threave, and Inverewe. We also had a trip around the Isle of Aran including a visit to Brodick garden. The photography was excellent and showed the delightful scenery to its best advantage. There was a comentary by Anita and a background of music to set the scene. Everyone throughly enjoyed the evening and left feeling much better for the experience.
