THE history of masks was the subject of our November meeting, and what a fascinating talk it proved to be! Christine Farmer has been collecting masks from around the world for over sixty years. Having travelled extensively she has acquired a myriad collection. Masks have been used in theatre in many countries since antiquity, particularly in Ancient Greece and later Italian and Japanese theatre. In some parts of the world they are thought to give the person wearing them magical powers.

Masks are usually made from available natural materials such as wood, feathers, bone, shells etc and in a wide range of designs. Through her masks Christine took us on a trip around the world, and Helen Roe thanked her for such an entertaining and informative talk.

Coffee, tea and cakes were then served while members had a chance to look at the competition entries. As well as the monthly competition there was the annual one for the Craft Cup. This was won by Angela Griffiths, with Helen Roe in second place and Elizabeth Kearney in third. Pam Rayner was first in the competition for a piece of china, followed by Daphne Glover with Elizabeth Kearney in third place.

Helen Roe took the business meeting, in which plans were finalised for our Centenary Weekend. All on course for a very special time! Ann Elliott gave the report on the Annual Council Meeting in Malvern which a number of us attended. We had a table display celebrating our centenary there which attracted a lot of interest. As the first institute in the Worcestershire Federation to celebrate its centenary we were given special mention at the meeting. On our behalf Audrey Whitehouse, our president, accepted a certificate from WI Headquarters.

The December meeting will be our usual Christmas party and will take place on December 8 at Wulstan Hall, Priest Lane. As always visitors are very welcome.
