If indeed more houses are to be built in the Vale, a reported in the Journal on February 27, let them at least be greener than those built now.

The new film Greening the Vale, initiated by Transition Evesham Vale, introduced by Alistair McGowan and launched at the Regal on March 10, showed how many houses built by the big commercial developers fall short of the standards the planet now needs for sustainability.

One housing project recently completed in North Littleton is a prime example of what can be done.

Rooftop Housing was involved in this, and in other projects where residents’ energy bills – and carbon emissions – are much lower.

In the film it is said that house buyers can save tens of thousands a year in energy bills by seeking out eco-houses.

It only costs another two per cent on the cost of a house to reduce its heat loss enormously, but commercial developers are only interested in their profit margins, and buyers are taking a foolishly short-term view.

This kind of short-term thinking is already destroying our planet.

Housebuilders who won’t build sustainable housing should be drummed out of the Vale.
