WHAT a town! The multi-storey car park on the north side of the river can only be accessed from the south.

What a town! People wishing to travel from the Rynal or Cowl Street to Port Street or anywhere in the north of the town cannot use the bridge conveniently provided by the Victorians but instead have to travel to Hampton, an extra journey of over a mile.

What a town! People wishing to avoid traffic hold-ups when visiting the doctors in Merstow Green from the north find that it is easier to travel via a car park where unnecessary diversionary barriers cause extra manoeuvring and increased danger to pedestrians.

What a town! Our magnificent Victorian bridge is only half used. One lane, from the north, is only available as a car park exit.

What a town! The new bridge has traffic lights which impede flow to such an extent that traffic backs up for a half mile into the town even on not-too-busy days. These lights appear to be three or even four-way. A roundabout here, as the lights are immediately after the bridge exit, would have allowed continual flow. I have a suspicion that the current arrangement will generally only permit one lane of the new bridge to be in use at any one time in many cases. So a huge waste of resource. The town's available river crossing provision is now no better than it was when the Workman Bridge, under emergency arrangements, was two-way, as we see from the traffic queues on Abbey Road.

As my old boss once said to me, as we examined factory plans showing some rooms with no doors, "Ah, Alan, but you're in Evesham now".

We need a full review of the town's traffic arrangements by someone with professional expertise in this field.
