TIM Congdon says “I want my Country back” (Journal, May 8).

Well, he is looking in the wrong place. Vast chunks of it belong to Russia, America, Australia, China, Arabia, and India etc, with Europe not in their league. And there will be more if Pfizer gets its claws into AstraZeneca.

He’d best be asking for his banks back. Ones that don’t encourage tax havens, commit fraud, sell duff deals and gamble our money, thereby causing the 2008 crisis. They are the real cause of the discontent that he is fuelling by scapegoating “foreigners”, blaming them as the main cause.

We would be best to remember why the EU was crafted by the survivors of the debacle that was post-war Europe.

They wished to unite in co-operation avoiding the abrasive nationalism that led to the intimidation and eventual deathly persecution of millions “not like us”.

For centuries our ancestors have been a stewing pot of different nationalities and are all the better for it, though like Europe there is room for improvement.

We won’t get it though if we leave the room, especially for his divisive, nationalistic reasons.
