"WE want our pub back," was the cry of concerned villagers in Elmley Castle when their pub was closed for several years, and now once again the future of this historic hostelry seems in doubt, at least for the rest of the summer and possibly into the new year.
The local council has listed the building as a village amenity, a charge being put on the deeds to ensure the building can only ever be used as a public house.
All very well, but with only 25 per cent of the villagers patronising the pub regularly how can it ever be a viable business?
The last tenants have declined the offer of a new lease. I'm sure the regulars will miss their hearty pub food, fine ales, and probably one of the best Sunday carveries in Worcestershire.
Perhaps Elmley Castle residents should wake up to the fact that no one will succeed at this inn without more local custom.
