I READ with dismay the disgraceful and disparaging comments from Bruce Beckley (October 23) and Julian Conway (October 16) about the Saturday market and its traders in Evesham.

I believe that the market is better now than it has been for years, with a good selection of stalls to cater for the people of Evesham and surrounding areas.

The competition it provides to the established businesses can only be a positive thing for customers, and at least now Evesham has some vibrancy about it on Saturdays, something that is certainly lacking during the rest of the week.

In answer to Mr Beckley's question about trading licences, there is no such thing needed to trade on the market in Evesham. The traders pay rent to the operator and that suffices.

Most traders worth their salt have their own public liability insurance, but if not then they would most certainly be covered by the market operator, who would have to have insurance to be able to run the market.

On a final note: surely anything that encourages more footfall into the town can only be a good thing.
