THE Christmas season is over and the Bridge Street decorations are almost
down, and a pathetic Christmas tree will soon be turned into wood chippings.
Will the council now take a good look at the state of Bridge Street and the vast need for it to be cleaned? At the moment we have weeds growing underneath the seats, a mountain of cigarette ends and and loose cobble stones.
Also, the council could cast a eye over the state of the High Street, and the Bedouin encampment we have had thrust upon us.
It cost the taxpayer a great deal of money to redevelop the High Street, but now we have oil stains from traders' vehicles that will cost a great deal to remove.
I cannot understand the logic of placing market stalls in these streets in the hope of bringing prosperity to struggling shops. It has the opposite effect as the money taken by stallholders is not spent locally.
I hope the shop owners continue to make a living and meet the rising cost of rent, wages, and rates, otherwise I see the town falling into the abyss.
