IN your report in the Journal about the Evesham Abbey Bridge delay fine (February 5), it was said that Worcestershire County Council denied a cycle path on the bridge was not part of the plan.

This is not true. It certainly was part of the plan if the council’s own website was to be believed.

The council used to have a website all about the bridge, and this was available until at least September 2014, since when it has been quietly withdrawn.

This website included an executive summary, and within that document it said: “It will also provide a dedicated cycle lane in the southbound direction, to aid cycle movement through the signalised junction immediately south of the bridge.”

It is a pity that this seems to have been conveniently forgotten by the council.

Officers and members were certainly aware of it as I drew it to their attention through a drawn out exchange of correspondence over the summer of 2014.

I am still of the opinion that a cycle lane is needed over the bridge.

If any of the bridge delay fine is ever recovered, I hope it pays for the lane.

It won’t cost much, but it will make a difference and help cyclists young and old to cross the bridge safely.
