I WRITE in support of Lance Perkins’ exasperation with speed limits and their enforcement.

Joan Constant is correct that other authorities assist the police in enforcement, but nevertheless it is their job. The person wielding a radar gun at me on a Gloucestershire road on Sunday was definitely a police officer, and had I been culpable it would have been the police issuing me with appropriate notice.

As for Adam Sinclair’s response – yes, of course, each aspect of police work is resourced and budgeted separately, but it is quite reasonable to challenge the use of time and resources on a particular matter.

People are understandably afraid to be critical of speed restrictions, but they often appear inappropriate (both excessive and sometimes inadequately restrictive), and the positioning of yellow boxes and the deployment of the mobile police radar guns can seem to be utterly pointless from the point of encouraging road safety.

I would not attempt to speak for others, but I feel that Lance Perkins has simply expressed a common-sense opinion which the authorities would do well to consider. Speed controls do add to road safety but could be deployed much better.
