CONTRARY to Nicky Babbage-Clark's assertion (Letters, April 23), the allowed speed limit is often not clearly displayed for 30mph zones, but is in fact a default speed limit in urban zones inferred through the absence of any posted speed limit and the presence of three or more lamps spaced not more than 183 metres apart.
One can understand why, in clear conditions and with no vulnerable pedestrians around, motorists approaching Pershore might conclude that 40mph wasn't suitable, but 35mph might be.
Be that as it may, a licence to drive is a privilege, and we have to try to apply our rules of the road to an imperfect road network, and consider the risks of opportunistic persecution in the process.
