I WAS amazed at the comment by Wychavon councillor Lynne Duffy (Journal, May 18) that the new fire station/Waitrose store could be a game changer for Evesham.

This lady, like Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire County Council, must be wearing rose- tinted spectacles.

After making a mess of the High Street, after making a mess of the new bridge, she now wants us to believe £10 million of our taxes will be going into this development, including £3 million toward the new fire station!

Has this lady and her associates actually been to Evesham lately?

There is no High Street to speak of. Due to council policy all the best shops are out of town (the only ones left are banks/building societies and charity shops).

The only voices you hear are foreign voices as you walk along because most people, like me, do their shopping elsewhere.

The picture on the front of the Journal gave an artist's impression of the new fire station. It was so big my wife thought it was the new Waitrose!

I'm sure I'm right in thinking that fire crew numbers have been cut.

So why one building so large and costly?

So local tax payers will once again be made to put their hands in their already dwindling pockets to pay for this use of our money.

At a time of national austerity local councillors think that it doesn't apply to them.

They don't get the message that the country is broke. It makes you want to weep!
