Walking through the sun-drenched Market Square I noticed half a dozen people enjoying the shade of the magnificent Plane tree with its comfortable seat surround. Then I recalled your Journal report of June 4 ‘First steps for square revamp’, which quoted proposals to remove that tree and the market from the square. The iconic phrase ‘revamp my’ came to mind, sorry I forgot the last bit but never mind, t’was something to do with donkeys!
Daft I call it. Improve a Market Square by removing its market then destroy and environmentally friendly tree that we have all enjoyed and watched mature over the years. What are AXA up to? All that just to control the Square’s operating licences, as you report? They already control the Riverside Centre which I then walked thorough counting eight closed units, including the 2 major ones. Its becoming a disaster. I was walking in there for the shade, not shopping, as most of my favourites have gone. I should have stayed by the tree!
We had a taste of cafe culture, courtesy of the delightful Cornish Pasty shop but they claimed that they wern’t profitable enough. If AXA really have and want to spend money their top priority should be to reduce the rents and fill their empty units with local businesses. We could then have visitors, exhausted from their enthusiastic Riverside shopping and enjoyment of our local market who could relax in our own brilliant, nearby local cafes or under the spreading branches of that terrific tree.
