A FLOTILLA of boats lit up Evesham for this year's river festival.

The event, which included a colourful display of 40 boats from all over the country wowed spectators with their interpretation of book titles.

The winning boat, TIPSY 2 stole the show by bringing to life the Wizard of Oz with a well-dressed boat and crew.

In addition, councillor David Goodge, deputy mayor of Evesham, attended the event and assisted Doug Payne, Evesham River Boat Festival chairman, to open ceremonies by launching the newest flood rescue boat on behalf of the South Worcestershire Life Savers.

The line-up for the day saw spectators welcome back with great affection the world’s number one life dog, the Newfoundland Rescue Dogs from South Wales where they showcased their skill at water rescue.

Mr Payne said: "This year’s Festival was even bigger and better, drawing many more boaters and crowds.

"And with such glorious weather, where else would you want to be than by the water, enjoying the music and entertainment on offer in Workman Gardens."

The day concluded with a line up of river bound activities such as the raft building race, which, with a nail biting finish, saw team “oldies” from the South Worcestershire Life Savers make it to the finishing line with raft just about intact.

Entertainment on the lawn and families and friends from around Evesham enjoyed local food and activities and closed off the evening with an illuminated boat parade followed by the much anticipated firework display, sponsored by Evesham Town Council and Wychavon District Council.
