100 Years Ago April 6 1907 There has been considerable feelings in Evesham against the proposal of the County Education Committee to pull down the present Grammar School premises and to erect an entirely new and up-to-date building on the site but close to the road, and the opposition has been founded upon a variety of grounds. In the first place it is felt that the top of Greenhill is not a convenient site for a school of this kind, which ought to be as near the centre of the town as possible. In the second place the proposal is condemned on the grounds that it is a pity to destroy a well-built and nicely situated house like Lansefield, and the project is also objected to on the grounds of extravagance.

75 Years Ago April 9, 1932 A pleasing feature of the annual Pershore Church meeting held in the Mission Hall on Friday was that every account presented showed a balance in hand, and this fact was commented upon by the Vicar (Dr R H Murray), who presided. He thanked the people of Pershore for their kindly co-operation and remarked that it was particularly creditable that the accounts should be so satisfactory despite a time of financial depression. Speaking with regard to the Free Will Offering Scheme, Dr Murray said that Pershore, the most important parish in the Rural deanery, had set a fine example. The Diocesan Quota had also been paid in full.

50 Years Ago April 6, 1957 A Plum Growers' Association is to be formed in Evesham with the primary function of co-ordinating facts concerning crops and prices from all plum-growing districts, so that a sound and effective policy can be established. This was decided at a special meeting of the Vale of Evesham group of the National Farmers' Union held at Wallace House on Friday. The group secretary, Mr H D Thorn, recalled that last season the Evesham branch suggested that such an association be formed and had written to a number of branches in the country where plums were grown to some extent asking for their views on the matter. All had replied saying they were willing to co-operate.
