Tributes paid to ‘straightforward and courteous’ policeman

Tributes were paid to a long-serving Vale policeman 100 years ago.

A Journal report of 1909 said: “Inspector Yarnold is ceasing to be connected with Worcestershire Constabulary with which he has been honourably associated for more than 26 years and would seek that retirement to which he is so well entitled.

“He has spent the whole of his working life as a policeman at Evesham and Broadway and at both places has won the high respect of the inhabitants, for he has always discharged his duties in the most straightforward and courteous manner and with proper regard for those whom it may have been his duty to arraign before the local magistrates. Inspector Yarnold joined the police force in February 1883, and after serving for six weeks at Worcester was sent to Evesham.

“The Evesham force then consisted of Sergeant Ganderton, who had grown old and grey in the county’s service, Constable Rowley, who was stationed in Bengeworth, and Constable Potter.

“This constituted the whole force which had charge of Evesham.

“In 1887 he was transferred to Broadway where he remained for seven years. He was promoted sergeant on January 1, 1894, and four years later made an inspector.”
