THE day after Muhammad Ali retired from the ring on June 27, 1979, the Journal reported on a boxing renaissance in Evesham.
The report said: “Efforts are being made to rekindle interest in the Vale of Evesham Amateur Boxing Club, which was revived several months ago.
“The club holds training evenings every Monday and Thursday and there was a good turnout of boys when the club was revived.
“After a programme of selection, the club is now looking for more young talent. ‘We are interested in recruiting boys aged between 11 and 17,’ said club coach Bob Mooney.
“Two of the club’s boxers, Sean Davies and Jess Burton recently took part in a boxing night organised by the Evesham Sporting Club at the Marine Ballroom.
“Davies won by a knock out after one minute and five seconds of the first round, and Burton was given a unanimous points decision over his opponent.
“Mr Mooney said: ‘We now want to build up the club and get in some regular training for the boys’.
“Mr Mooney is being helped by an assistant trainer and they were delighted with the performances of the two boys at the Sporting Club tournament.”
The same edition of the Journal reported other local sporting successes: “Sporting champions of Evesham High School Jonathan Elabor and Graham Birdsall are to compete in the All England Schools’ championship at Nottingham. Jon, aged 17, of Myatt Road, Offenham, will throw the javelin, and Graham, 14, of Withytrees Road, South Littleton, will run the 800 metres, representing Worcestershire in the competition.”
