100 Years Ago July 3, 1909 The proceedings of an auction sale, held at the town hall, Evesham, last Monday evening were of a more lively description than usual. A firm of auctioneers from Whittlesea was announced to sell 20 up-to-date new bicycles, and the local cycle agents, who do not approve of this method of trading, attended the sale. A large number of questions were put to the auctioneer, principally with regard to the guarantee that was offered with the bicycles, and also as to the place at which they were manufactured. A pair of damaged tyres and a pair of broken forks, alleged to have come off cycles bought at auction, were exhibited. Either as a consequence of the interposition of the local agents, or as a coincidence, trade was very slow, and we believe that only one bicycle found a purchaser.
75 years Ago June 30, 1934 AT a meeting of the Worcestershire Standing Joint Committee on Saturday, attention was drawn to the unsuitability of the police station at Evesham. In a report recommending the provision of new police quarters at Evesham, the Chief Constable (Capt J E Lloyd Williams) said currently there was accommodation for only three single men. They had only one living room for all purposes, and this room, owing to the absence of a charge room, had also to be used for searching prisoners, etc. Recently the men had to have their meal delayed owing to a destitute tramp, brought into the station, dying in this room, and their meal had to be eaten off the table from which the corpse had just been moved. It was decided that estimates should be prepared for a new station. It was also resolved that one acre of land at the junction of Three Springs Road and the Worcester to Pershore main road at Pershore be bought from the Croome Estate for the erection of a police station.
30 Years Ago July 5, 1979 THE organisers of the Pershore Festival, which ended on Saturday, achieved their aim to present performances and events of quality and variety this year and were generally pleased with the outcome of this event. The festival, which began in early June, gave particular emphasis to events involving children as this is the International Year of the Child. Starting with competitions in all aspects of dancing for children from Worcestershire dance schools, it included competitions for young pianists, Youth Speaks, children’s musical entertainment and art and craft exhibitions from schools in Pershore. Mrs Margaret Veal, festival secretary, said: “In general, the attendance was good but there were one or two events which had a disappointingly small audience.” The chairman of the festival, Mr Robert Ashworth, said: “I thought it was a very good festival this year and people enjoyed it enormously.”
