A SMART new base for Scouts in Pershore was described as “too grand to be a hut” 40 years ago.

The Journal of 1971 reported: “Pershore’s new Scout hut has been opened by group captain A R F De Salis, the county commissioner, having taken 14 months to complete at a cost of almost £1,000.

It means the Scout hut at the bottom of Pershore Central Car park has been extended to include a kitchen, toilet facilities, two instruction rooms, a Scouters room and a storage area. ‘It is too grand to be a hut,’ said Cpt De Salis. ‘It is a Scout Centre and the Scouts have worked very hard to achieve this.’ Mr David Alexander, chairman of the Pershore Scout Committee, said the results would not have been achieved without teamwork and loans. ‘The teamwork has been between members of the committee, friends and Scouts. But none of it could have been done if not for the generous loans by people in the town which we are now slowly repaying,’ he said.”
