A VALE artist won a great honour 40 years ago.

The Journal of 1971 reported: “An internationally known artist from Harvington has been elected a full member of the Society of Wood Engravers & Relief Painters in London. Mr William T Rawlinson, who lives at Myatts Field, is the head of the art department at Stratford High School. Mr Rawlinson is the first artist to be elected a full member straight away, without first serving for many years as an associate member.

“The society was formed in 1922 by such world famous artists as Lucian Pissarro, Gertrude Hermes and John Nash. The headquarters are the newly opened Mall Galleries at Nash House in Carlton House Terrace, London.

“This is one of the highest honours that can be given to an artist.

“Mr Rawlinson, who was an official war artist and painted many of the pictures in the Imperial War Museum in London, has also been a gold medallist at the paris Salon since 1958.”
