THE family of the driver of a train featured on this page earlier this month have recalled his time behind the wheel.

Valerie Harman sent in a photo of the train taking children on a ride during the celebrations of the Coronation in 1953. The train was owned by Marshall’s Transport and driven by Ivor Marshall.

His wife, Christina, contacted the Journal and said Ivor drove the train most weekends at the Crown and Viaduct Meadow but on this occasion the train was in Cowl Street for the Coronation.

“My daughter was just a young girl at the time,” she remembered.

“He and his brothers were Marshall’s Transport. His father founded the business.”

Mr I Marshall’s nephew, Nick Marshall, also dug out an old family photo featuring his father Alan Marshall with Mr I Marshall and their brother Thomas ‘Pom’ Marshall.

Current owners George Simpson also spotted the article and added that all the photos from the time are on display at the company’s site in Throckmorton.
