SOME excitement was caused in Mill Street, Evesham, 100 years ago by a runaway horse.

The horse, which was described as a valuable animal belonging to the Corporation, was attached to a dray belonging to Mr Henry Stanton.

The dray was being used for the removal of road sweepings when the incident took place.

The Corporation steam roller was at work in another part of Mill Street, and the rush of steam, as the driver was cleaning his gauge of glass, startled the horse and caused him to bolt in the direction of the gas works, where some Corporation men stopped him opposite Mr P H Fletcher’s house.

The horse was not injured, but the dray sustained a broken shaft and other damage through coming into contact with one of the corners at the flour mills.

Two cyclists had a narrow escape.
