KIND-hearted people have donated more than £1,000 to a Pershore Scout group following an appeal for help in this paper.

Two weeks ago the Journal asked for people from in and around the town to support the 1st Pershore Scout Group in their campaign to raise £55,000 to build and equip a new meeting hut.

Since then the group has received three cheques totalling £1,110.

The group lost their hut 13 years ago when it was demolished after flooding and to allow for the extension of the neighbouring leisure centre.

They currently meet at Abbey Park School but are hoping to be able to move to their new site, on land offered to them by Pershore College.

But despite already raising nearly £30,000, including a donation from Wychavon District Council they still need to raise £25,500.

Volunteer secretary Hayley Tomkins said they were overwhelmed by the donations already received.

“They wanted to contribute after reading the paper,” she said. “The first cheque was from an elderly lady who was sobbing because her husband used to be a scout and he had recently died.

“The next donation for £100 came from a Pinvin chap who was a former Scout.

“The third was for £1,000.

The man said his son was a Scout years ago and they enjoyed bringing him and they would like to give something back.

“I was overwhelmed when the money came through. It was all through the generosity of three elderly people.

“I had hoped local businesses would help out. So far only Tomkins Plumbing & Heating have said they will send a cheque.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated and the article in the paper.”
