AN INTREPID Halesowen pensioner is preparing to hike to Mount Kilimanjaro to raise cash for charity.
John Bendall, aged 67, has been raising money in Halesowen town centre to help Macmillan Cancer Support pay for nurses who help those stricken with the disease.
In total Mr Bendall, who is a volunteer on the Severn Valley Railway, has raised £3,400 which will pay for a nurse for nearly a month.
Currently in training for his Kilimanjaro trek, which starts on September 26, Mr Bendall is determined to succeed and raise as much money as he can.
He said: "I was one of those one in people affected by cancer.
"The victims were close friends some of whom Macmillan Cancer Support aided so I decided to help the charity by fundraising."
The avid walker added: "I am really looking forward to seeing Kilimanjaro for myself, it will be quite a challenge.
"With 10,000 new cancer diagnosis each year in the Black Country I am proud to have made a small difference that will mean so much to those cancer sufferers and their families."
