SEVEN military men narrowly missed out on a world record this weekend when they took on a 100 mile challenge for Help for Heroes.

Marines, paratroopers and an army soldier, completed 100 miles on a treadmill in Asda in Worcester on Saturday in aid of the charity.

They had hoped to do the challenge in 10 hours but beat their target by 59 minutes only to later discover the world record, which was set by a team of 12, is a time of 8 hours and 23 minutes.

Now the team, who also completed the 100 mile run last year, say they want to beat the record next year.

Royal Marine Louis Wytcherley, 27, from Malvern, said: "We began with ten minute sprints, then we went down to five minutes.

"You have to do a high pace to get the miles in so at the end we were doing 18km an hour. We did have to drop the pace a bit though.

"Hopefully we can do it next year and do the world record."

The group also collected money all day in Asda raising £1,720 for Help for Heroes.

Marine Wytcherley added: "We are all military personnel so it makes it closer to home for us."

He also thanked Asda and Pf2 gyms which donated the treadmill for the event.
