ONE of Worcester's most popular attractions is getting a £200,000 cash injection to make it even more family-friendly.

Your Worcester News can reveal how the city council is drawing up plans to invest in Gheluvelt Park - including building new dedicated on-site toilets for Splashpad users.

The move, revealed by the city's Conservative leadership, follows years of grumbles that children and families have to trek over to the other side of the park to use the loo.

The anticipation is that the bulk of the cash will go on the toilets, with any leftover funds used to make some other unidentified improvements to the site's appeal.

A new area serving tea, coffee and refreshments, first raised as a suggestion by councillors in August, has not been ruled out.

Councillor Andy Roberts, cabinet member for cleaner and greener, said: "At the moment you get families who get there, find a nice spot and put their towels down, and find if their children need to use the loo they've got to trek a fair way to get there."

It has been well received by Splashpad users, who say it should encourage more people in.

Mum-of-two Mandy Pugh, 37, who lives off Barbourne Road, said: "I've got an 11-year-old son and daughter aged seven, and they love it.

"The Splashpad is so packed during the summer, if you've got to gather your belongings and go with them to the toilets you find your space goes.

"It's a good idea."

Councillor Mike Whitehouse, who represents the area, said: "It's long overdue, with so many people going there this has to be good news.

"What it will also do is encourage children to do the right thing."

At the moment the only loos are either a rusty old pair bordering the entrance of Gheluvelt Park right by Barbourne Road, or another set inside the Pump House cafe right across the other side.

The investment forms parts of the Tory administration's Corporate Plan investments for the 2015/16 financial year which kicks off in April.

Subject to being approved in February, a planning application will be drawn up for the revamp in the expectation work can take place next year.
