MORE than 2,000 people in Worcestershire have pledged to never condone domestic abuse or sexual violence.

Today is the last day of the international 16 Days of Action campaign, which has seen several events raise awareness of issues surrounding domestic abuse and sexual violence.

The White Ribbon campaign, which ran alongside the 16 Days, asked people to pledge online to never condone the abuse, and so far 2,126 people have made that pledge.

Jocelyn Anderson, the chief officer of the West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (WMRSASC), said it is important for people to remember that these issues don't just go away at the end of the 16 days.

She said: "The 16 days highlight sexual violence and domestic abuse but rape happens every day, all year round. We need to keep raising awareness of the issues surrounding sexual violence and working towards effective support for all survivors."

Between April 2013 and March 2014, WMRSASC offered counselling services to 264 women in Worcestershire alone as well as taking 671 calls on the helpline, and 79 per cent of all of the centre's clients had never been involved in domestic violence.

Martin Lakeman, strategic co-ordinator for Worcestershire Forum Against Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence, said: "We have welcomed the opportunity to highlight the devastating impact of domestic abuse and sexual violence during the 16 days of the campaign.

"It is important to emphasise that our work goes on 365 days of the year to raise awareness and protect victims across Worcestershire. No one should have to put up with abuse and we are privileged in Worcestershire to have a range of specialist agencies working tirelessly to protect and support victims.

"My message is a simple one — please don't suffer in silence, tell someone."
