CHILDREN in a Kenyan orphanage have received new clothing, thanks to the generosity of people in Wyre Forest.

Two workshops took place last year in Kidderminster to teach adults how to transform old pillowcases into dresses for children in Africa.

Using sewing machines, participants learnt how to create beautiful and colourful handmade garments, which have been donated to girls at the Omwabini orphanage in Kenya.

Jo Luke, of Kidderminster, who organised the workshops, was inspired to set the activity up by the Dress a Girl Around the World UK charity, which has donated more 11,000 garments to 21 countries.

She said: "It is simply just taking a pillowcase and sewing it into a dress. I fancied having a go at it because it's just such a simple idea.

"It's just amazing, people from Wyre Forest have made them.

"I ran workshops at Kidderminster Town Hall and Holy Innocents Church Hall last year, to show people how to make the pillowcases into dresses.

"We created 85 dresses that have now been sent out to Omwabini in Kenya. They were taken out there on January 21, to the Kenyan Orphanage.

"It is just a simple idea that will benefit them so much. A child needs a dress."
