A BRAVE young woman from Redditch, who beat cancer as a child, is set to take part in a skydive to raise money for the hospital which treated her whilst also celebrating a decade in remission.

Phoebe Prudden, aged 22, was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumour, when she was 11-years-old.

She had brain surgery at Birmingham Children's Hospital on September 4, 2004 and spent around four weeks recovering on Ward 9.

Phoebe underwent several months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment, which ended in March 2005, and to ensure the cancer did not return, she attended appointments at Birmingham Children’s Hospital every six months.

Later, when she reached 17, these were held at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital every two years instead.

On Saturday, March 21 Phoebe and her sister Elise, aged 17, will be sky-diving at Langar Air Field in Nottingham.

But Phoebe says she is confident  that she will be okay having dealt with cancer at such a young age.

She said: "You have got to do it when you are young. I am nervous at the moment.

“The main reason I am nervous is that I don’t know what to expect but I've heard it's amazing. In a sense I am an adrenaline junkie and I like to go on big roller coasters.

“We have chosen this charity in particular as it is very close to our hearts, due to the care and treatment in which I received from the hospital 10-years-ago, when I was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour.

“To celebrate my anniversary of combating brain cancer and to raise awareness of the marvellous work carried out at the children’s hospital, we decided to raise money by carrying out a challenge that will take us to our limits.

“When I was diagnosed and having treatment for my tumour she (Elise) was only six or seven, all she can remember was visiting me in the hospital.”

The sisters will be holding a fundraising event at the Rocklands social club on Friday, March 6 where a disco, raffle, auction and lucky dips will be taking place.

Phoebe works for Thomas Cook as a children’s entertainer, spending April to October away from home.
