A former Malvern man is helping to fight raging bush and forestry fires near Cape Town, South Africa.

Charlie Wright, whose parents still live in West Malvern, is one of hundreds of volunteers called out to stop the flames, which are being driven by "excessively high winds" and are encroaching on local properties.

Mr Wright has been involved in teams felling trees and scrub to create fire-breaks on Chapman’s Peak above his own family home, in Noordhoek.

Wildlife on the mountains has also been severely hit by the wall of fire and Mr Wright has also been engaged in saving many young tortoises.

Latest reports say that rain has started to fall in the Cape Town area bringing fresh hope to hundreds of threatened residents, including Mr Wright.
