THE role played by Worcestershire in the formation of modern democracy in Britain is the subject of a new short documentary.

The eight minute-long video was created by the Battle of Worcester Society and is presented by its president Ben Humphries, who takes the viewer through some of the most important events to take part in the county.

The video – which can be seen below – was commissioned by Worcester City Council and Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership in an effort to bring the history of the city to a wider audience.

Mr Humphries said the short film entitled Worcestershire, Home of Liberty and Democracy, had already been well-received on social media.

“Due to its success the Battle of Worcester Society has already started to produce an audio podcast series that looks at the sites of the video in more detail,” he said.

“There is a growing interest in the role that Worcester had to play in the democratisation of the western world and organisations are now starting to work together to ensure that this fascinating heritage is not only preserved for future generations but invested in for the development of Worcestershire's economy.

“Places such as Boston, Massachusetts make a huge thing of their Freedom Trail and it pays off.

“It's time that Worcestershire started doing the same.”
