FAMILIES flocked to a Worcester park to enjoy what is left of the sunshine beneath the water fountains.

Your Worcester News reported this week that people in Worcester were disappointed to find that despite the hot weather and the Easter holidays, the Splashpad in Gheluvelt Park was only to be open at weekends.

However, Worcester City Council announced on Thursday that a hasty rethink meant the Splashpad will now be open everyday for the rest of the month.

Sunseekers and children eager to play in the water visited the Splashpad yesterday to make the most of the sunshine.

The move came just in time for temperatures to peak today at around 18C in Worcester.

Saturday is set to be cloudy with temperatures reaching highs of 10C, with a chance of drizzle.

Sunday should be slightly warmer, although it won't match this week's temperatures and there may be frost in the early hours of Sunday morning.

David Sutton, service manager for a cleaner and greener city, said: “We’re pleased to announce that the popular Splashpad in Gheluvelt Park will be open from 11am to 4pm, and will then be open at the same times for every day for the rest of April.

“The splashpad is usually only open at weekends in April, but the unseasonably warm weather has created strong customer demand so we’re delighted to have found a way to increase the number of days it’s available.

“We’ve recently finished installing new automatic sensors that mean the Splashpad only operates when activated by visitors standing on the activation pads during opening hours. This means we will not be wasting energy on colder days when no one is using the splashpad. We therefore intend to open it seven days a week from this weekend onwards, with longer opening hours from May 1.”
