A ROAD had to be closed following a chemical spillage in Droitwich on Tuesday night.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a chemical spillage from a lorry on Kidderminster Road in Droitwich at 9.24pm.
Four fire appliances and an Environmental Protection Unit were sent to the incident, where firefighters were faced with a liquid spillage, of an unknown substance, from containers holding different chemicals within a vehicle.
Fire crews worked alongside West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Mercia Police to identify the substance using gas tight suits and monitoring equipment.
A road block and cordon were established until the substance was identified and secured within an oversized drum.
Station commander, Mark Strutt, said: “The crews worked closely with on site specialists to identify and secure the substance, which was due to be delivered to another site. Leaking was identified from four seperate18kg drums in the lorry. Due to the nature of the hazard it was important that we took all precautions while minimising the impact on local residents and businesses. Working with West Mercia Police, we established a road block and cordon to prevent access to the site.”
