ALDI has ended months of speculation and confirmed it hopes to set up shop in St John's, creating around 40 jobs in the process.

The discount supermarket has submitted a planning application to bring another store to the city located on the retail park in Tybridge Street.

It would mean Worcester could soon be home to three Aldi stores, after it was revealed in March that a deal had been done for a branch of the chain to move into the vacant premises in Bath Road, formerly filled by Homebase.

A spokesman for Aldi said: "We are delighted to be able to confirm our plans for the PC World unit. Our existing store in Worcester is extremely popular and we're keen to provide residents to the west of the city centre with more convenient access to an Aldi store.

"Residents in the west of Worcester currently have to travel over Worcester Bridge and then follow the one-way system to visit the existing Aldi store.

"We believe a second Aldi food store in this location would improve the shopping experience in the existing store and benefit the local community on the other side of the River Severn."

If Worcester City Council approve the move, Aldi would move into what is currently PC World, following the computer giant's decision to vacate the premises.

A spokesman for PC World has confirmed that the Currys store, in Blackpole, will be incorporated into a combined PC World and Currys store.

He said: "We can confirm that it is our intention to leave the PC World store in Tybridge Street, allowing for relevant planning processes.

"In turn, we intend to relaunch our nearby Currys store on the Blackpole Retail Park as a 2-in-1 Currys PC World offering an even wider range of technology and an enhanced customer experience.

"This is all part of our nationwide programme of refitting and upgrading our store estate for customers."

It has also been confirmed that the existing Tybridge Street car park will remain available for use by Aldi's customers, and will also remain free of charge.

Your Worcester News reported in February that plans seemed to be afoot for the move, but the German giant remained tight-lipped.

But now that the plans have been revealed readers have expressed their views on our Facebook page.

Dawnie Jones posted: "GoodAbout time a cheaper shop was this side of the river."

Tracey Wardell said: "Yeah, save going through all the traffic to get to the other one, does my head in."

Lizzie Leach echoed the calls, saying: "Definitely a good thing, saves going across the river."

The current Aldi store is located in Pheasant Street.
