THE shocking moment a crop sprayer crashed into the side of Bidford Bridge sending brickwork tumbling into the river has been caught on CCTV.

Alan and Sally Woodcock's camera captured last Tuesday's crash which has left the medieval bridge closed to traffic and in need of significant repair work.

Mrs Woodcock said she and her husband were shocked to see the farm vehicle crash through the side of the bridge once they realised it would have been caught by their CCTV camera above their car park.

"I was absolutely horrified when we watched the footage.

"We didn't see it happen but when we got back home on Tuesday my husband wondered if it was on our CCTV camera.

"We have it on the building to protect the car park but the bridge is behind the car park.

"When you watch it, it is lucky he didn't end up going into the river.

"It is horrifying."

Mr Woodcock has lived in Bidford-on-Avon for over 20 years while Mrs Woodcock has lived in the village for about nine years.

Bidford bridge remains open for pedestrians but is subject to daily inspections for safety while businesses remain open as usual.

Warwickshire County Council and organisations involved with the 600-year-old bridge including Historic England and Avon Navigation Trust met yesterday to discuss a timetable for repair work to be carried out.

Mrs Woodcock said: "Traffic has been getting worse for a while and I think it may have started when people began using sat navs.

"But it is not the cars that are the problem, it is the geat big juggernauts which come across it.

"It is going to take a long time to get properly repaired.

"It is a listed bridge which wasn't built to take large vehices."
