TWO walkers have died after being struck by lightning as an electrical storm swept across the Brecon Beacons this afternoon.

Two other walkers are being treated for burns.

Emergency services, including the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue team training in the area at the time, were called to several scenes on Pen y Fan from just after midday today.

The two most seriously injured died at the Prince Charles hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, this afternoon.

Two other casualties are receiving specialist treatment for burns.

The deaths were confirmed in a statement this afternoon from the Prince Charles Hospital.

A first incident saw three people reported as struck by lightning at Cribyn Peak as the storm passed over Pen y Fan - with two sustaining what were described as "life threatening injuries".

The injured were airlifted off the mountain by an RAF rescue helicopter.

One has since died and another transferred to the specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital, Swansea.

The other death occurred after a separate strike at Corn Du, south-west of Pen y Fan during the storm, with the casualty also taken to Prince Charles hospital.
