A KINGSWINFORD garden centre boss is holding a gathering in his own private pastures to raise money for a school in Africa.

John Massey, owner of Ashwood Nurseries, is holding a charity evening soiree on Friday, July 24, in his garden - situated behind his business - on the banks of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal.

The evening, which is raising money for Planting for Hope Uganda, starts at 7pm and will feature Pimms, canapés and live music from singer songwriter Deborah Rose.

Kate Oakley of Planting for Hope Uganda, which supports women and children of Kititi village through self-supporting sustainable farming methods and education, will also be at the evening to answer any questions on the cause.

One of the event organisers, Jackie Cartledge, said she was inspired to raise money for the charity after a two month visit to Uganda earlier this year.

She said: “I’m raising funds to build new latrines for Cornerstone School in Kititi, Uganda, because on my first visit to the school, which has more than 300 pupils, I was shocked at the lack of facilities.

“They had no windows, noisy metal doors which made the classrooms look like cells, classrooms with no desks or chairs, there were no books, text or otherwise, no play equipment – in fact it was just brick shell rooms.

“However the children were delightful, smiling and very keen to learn.”

Jackie said she is grateful for John’s support to the cause, adding: “I thank John very much for his generosity. This is a very special place for me as I was born at Ashwood and spent my idyllic childhood there.

“I know it is also a very special place for John as well and he has created a beautiful garden in the 25 or so years he has owned it.”

Tickets costing £15 are available from Ashwood Nurseries, by calling 01384 401996, or by contacting the charity by email at thebard123@sky.com or calling 07825 437796.
