A SUPER Stourbridge golf student is on course for major success after being named Stourbridge College Sportsman of the Year 2015.

Jake Walley, 18, joined the college’s golf academy in September 2013 and has already achieved a stream of accolades during his time there.

He reached the national finals of the British Schools and Colleges’ League at St Andrew’s, the final of the Intercollegiate Golf Tour in Lytham St Anne’s and came 3rd in the National Colleges Sport Championship in Bath.

Jake has also qualified for the Junior Open Final in Andalucia, Spain, three years running finishing 3rd in 2014.

After receiving his award during a ceremony at Aston Villa Football Club, Jake said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have picked up this award.

“I’m determined to become a professional golfer and have secured a place at Cornwall University to study a foundation degree in tournament golf.

“Being able to continue to play golf at the academy whilst studying for my sports diploma has helped me focus on continuous improvement and I’ve reduced my handicap from five to scratch.

“I’m really looking forward to competing as a professional in the future.”

As a member of Hagley Golf and Country Club and Junior Captain of Halfpenny Green Golf Club, Jake has represented Staffordshire County for four years for both Juniors and Men’s teams and finished 2nd in last year’s Nett Order of Merit.

Stella Raphael-Reeves, director of sport at Stourbridge College, said: “Jake has worked extremely hard during his time studying with us and is about to complete his Level 3 Diploma in Sport with double distinctions.

“His commitment to his studies, as well as to his sport, made him an ideal candidate for Sportsman of the Year for the whole college – a superb achievement considering the breadth and range of sporting talent across all of our campuses in Birmingham and the Black Country.”
