LEWIS Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland might be a classic children’s story but an independent hotel in Worcestershire is celebrating the book’s 150th anniversary with a special themed afternoon tea this month.

The Evesham Hotel, which has an Alice in Wonderland suite for families, is inviting guests to tuck into treats like Queen of Hearts jam tarts and other treats on the Alice-theme throughout August.

General manager David Field said: “The Alice in Wonderland themed bedroom has become quite the tourist attraction at The Evesham Hotel, enticing Lewis Carroll fans from around the world.”

The suite has toadstools and a secret play den as well as fun bedroom fittings like a headboard adored with heart playing cards.

“Our Alice-inspired afternoon tea can be enjoyed in parties of up to four people and with all jam tarts and other cakes completely homemade, we are hoping it will be as much of a hit with locals as it will be with hotel guests.”

And if the weather is fine, people can take their special tea in the hotel’s gardens and enjoy a game of croquet on the lawn.

• Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, to give it its full name, was written in 1865 by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.

• The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre.
