THE Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Adha is being celebrated around the city today.

Muslims gathered at the Al-Madina Jamme Masjid and Worcester Muslim Centre on Tolladine Road as well as the mosque on Tallow Hill to take part in the festival this morning, which commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God. This festival also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

During the ceremony, which lasted around an hour, passages were read from the Quran and prayers were said.

Muhammed Haque, chairman of the Masjid and Worcester Muslim Centre, said: "During these celebrations, Muslims make a special effort to wear new clothes or their nicest outfits, attend a prayer service at their local mosque and to listen to a sermon. They also personally greet or send paper or electronic Eid cards to family members, friends and businesses associates and give gifts to children.

"There will also be a feast of good food with family and it's just a wonderful and important occasion.

"On behalf of Al-Madina Jami Masjid and Worcester Muslim Centre, I'd like to wish everyone Eid Mubarak."
