PEOPLE who want to see Brickfields fireworks return next year are being invited to a public meeting on Friday, October 16.

The popular display usually attracts thousands to the KGV playing fields but have been cancelled by Worcester Community Trust who has organised it for the past four years.

CEO Helen Scarrett said a lack of staff time and cuts to their core funding had sadly led them to pull the plug on this year's family event which costs around £5,000 to put on.

The displays are free but a bucket collection for donations only collected £83 last year.

However, Mrs Scarrett said the Trust would be happy to give advice and support to the Facebook group Bring Back Brickfields Halloween/Fireworks Event which hopes to organise a display next year.

People are being invited to take part in the meeting at 7pm in the main hall of the KGV Community Centre, Ash Avenue.

Natalie Francesca Gowing, who set up the group which got over 1,000 members in under 24 hours, said: "I'd love as many of us as possible to be there with any ideas and help so we can make this happen next year."

Miss Gowing, from Grasmere Drive, Ambleside, said earlier this week that they hoped city businesses would offer funding.

She said: "It's a shame the fireworks won't go ahead this year because so many people go, it is a huge event.

"It really brings the community together, it's a lovely event, really nice and has something for all ages - football tournaments, fairground rides, a dance competition in the community centre.

"We are hoping to be able to raise funds for next year because it is a bit too late to bring it back this year."

Anyone who wants to get involved should join the Facebook group or attend the meeting.
