A WORCESTER paramedic has returned from his latest visit to Nepal where he handed over thousands of pounds, raised to support people left devastated by horrific earthquakes.

Phil Llewellyn went out to Kathmandu in March and handed over £8,000, raised through various fundraising events such as a charity ball, and setting up a charity organisation called Rebuild Nepal.

Mr Llewellyn, a paramedic with the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said £8,000 would be enough to rebuild four houses, which are urgently needed as many villagers are still living in temporary shelters after the Nepal Earthquake which struck in April 2015, killing more than 9,000 people and injuring more than 21,000.

Mr Llewellyn, who lives in Norton near Worcester, went out to Nepal in a group with eight other health care professionals, which included paramedics, nurses, doctors and radiographers.

As tourism is down in Nepal, and the area relies heavily on the trekking and climbing industry, during the visit Mr Llewellyn arranged an expedition to Annapurna Base Camp, so they could employ five porters and a guide for the trip.

Mr Llewellyn, who has travelled to Nepal a number of times to provide humanitarian relief, said: "For almost 12 months these people have lived under tin sheets and tarpaulin, it is really sad to see.

"The Nepalese people are so loving and genuine and are full of smiles no matter what, but don’t be distracted by the smiles they are desperate people that have been forgotten.

"Kathmandu looks a lot better since the earthquake, rubble has been removed, rebuilding has started and it looks like business as usual.

"But the remote areas, like Kaule, look pretty much the same as they did after the earthquake."

After returning to the UK, Mr Llewellyn has already restarted fundraising for Rebuild Nepal, giving two talks, and he is planning to organise another ball.
