THE driver of a Volkswagen car which crashed on the A38 in Rubery at the weekend (May 14), closing it in both directions, has been arrested for drink driving.

Emergency services were alerted to the scene at about 10.37am after a car overturned near junction 4 of the M5.

On arrival, they found the car had left the road, after hitting the crash barrier, a road-sign, a lamppost and a tree, ending up down an embankment.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews from Bromsgrove and Droitwich stations were able to remove the driver from the car by taking off the roof.

They were then taken to University Hospital Birmingham by West Midlands Ambulance Service with minor injuries.

Later in the afternoon the driver was arrested for being under the influence of alcohol after giving a breathalyzer reading of 118.

Following the crash clear-up Midlands Air Ambulance’s Helimed 06 tweeted: “Good team work by police, fire and ambulance. Pt lucky to have escaped with minor injuries.”

The northbound carriageway of the A38 from the M5 reopened at about 12.30pm, while the southbound lane opened again later that afternoon.

The two year old VW Scirocco suffered extensive damage and was written off.
