The A38 at Kempsey, near Worcester, will now remain open despite a hole being found under the road, council chiefs say.

The hole, close to the village's Anchor Inn, was described by Worcestershire County Council's @WorcsTravel Twitter account as a "void".

The road was initially set to be closed after a hole was found under the road.

But council bosses now say the A38 will be remaining open, under temporary traffic light control, and concrete is being poured into the hole.

A spokesperson for the authority has described the hole as a "cavity under the surface" of the road.

Earlier today the council said that, for safety reasons, it would be closing the road and setting up a diversion.

But it has just tweeted that "A38 at #Kempsey will now remain open with temp traffic lights. Concrete to be pumped in to fill void @Anchor_Kempsey fully open for business"

Severn Trent Water alerted the council to the problem and is also working at the scene.

More updates to follow.
