DEDICATED blood donors from Wyre Forest who have potentially saved more than 1,200 lives between them, have been recognised for their loyalty and commitment.

The four blood donors from Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport, who had collectively made 410 donations, were honoured for their lifesaving efforts by NHS Blood and Transplant with commemorative medals at a ceremony in Wolverhampton.

John Bowman, 69, a retired school teacher, began donating blood in 1967 as a student.

Mr Bowman, from Kidderminster, said: “Giving blood is a great way to pay something back into this life.

“Blood donors helped my daughter when she needed three units of blood after surgery.”

Mavis Palmer, 71, has been donating blood since she was 18, after being encouraged by her father.

The Stourport resident added: “Giving blood does not take long and someone, somewhere needs that blood every day.”

Also honoured at the event, were 63-year-old Christopher Dunn, from Bewdley, and 78-year-old Derek Hill, from Kidderminster.

Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people – so if a donor has given blood 100 times, they have potentially helped save the lives of up to 300 patients in local hospitals through donating blood.

Karen Healy, senior marketing coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “These loyal donors are very special to us, which is why such an event gives us the opportunity to say a real heartfelt thanks.

“Between them, they have saved thousands of lives and improved the lives of countless others who have required blood transfusions.

“These donors are an inspiration to us all.”
