REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley has spoken of her sadness after Prime Minister David Cameron announced he is to resign but said it was the "right thing" for him to do.

The news came after Britain voted to leave the European Union at last night's referendum.

Mrs Lumley said: "I was very sad when I heard the Prime Minister’s intention to step down. I was one of the 84 Conservative MPs who signed the letter urging him to stay on after the vote.

“I fully understand his decision however and I believe it is the right thing to do in the circumstances. Parliament now needs to reunite when it reconvenes next week.

“In terms of who is likely to take over as leader of the party, I anticipate there being a wide range of candidates available and the Parliamentary Party will decide the two shortlisted candidates later in the summer to be then voted on by rank and file members.”
