YOUTH workers in Kidderminster are appealing to residents to help them win funding to provide a mobile skate park at their base in the town centre.

Kidderminster and District Youth Trust (KDYT), which operates from Youth House in Bromsgrove Street, is through to the second round of the OneFamily community awards with a chance of winning a £25,000 grant.

The trust want to provide mobile skate facilities at Youth House, which will be designed by skaters and will be regularly available as an alternative for young people to use instead of car parks and other areas of Kidderminster town centre.

The trust are appealing to residents to vote for them in the awards to help make the project a success. When the Shuttle went to press, KDYT were currently in fourth place.

A spokesman from KDYT said: “Through work with young people, local councillors, the police and the wider community we have identified that there is a need for a skating facility in the town centre, which will be an alternative to public spaces, should young skaters wish to use it.

“Our detached team have spoken with skaters who have an idea of how it should look and what equipment they would like to see that would replicate what they skate on around town – they would be involved in designing the facility from scratch.

“We are unable to provide a permanent facility as this would cost a lot more money and would require a lot of supervision, however, we hope to have the facility open as much as possible, so we would be looking for volunteers to help us run it.

“The skate park would be set up on the Youth House car park and we will be able to section it off so people can still park and there will be no risk to cars or skaters. The skate park will only be open when there are staff at Youth House meaning there will be first aiders and supervision for young people using the park.

“The only way we can raise the money to get quality facilities is if people vote for the project so we are asking everyone to help us to provide this much-needed facility for young people.”

Kidderminster and District Youth Trust are this year celebrating their 50th anniversary. The trust was founded in 1966 by the then Kidderminster Mayor, Charles Talbot, who remains an actively involved trustee today.

Earlier this year, they were confirmed as one of the successful organisations for the Worcestershire County Council tender for Positive Activities between 2016 and 2019.
